A landscape design that complements this urban village

BACKGROUND

OOBE worked with MODA Living and CDA Architects on the delivery of this PRS scheme in the west end of Edinburgh’s city centre.

THE CONCEPT

The site is located in a prominent location only a short walk from Edinburgh Castle, Haymarket Station and Bruntsfield Links making it extremely accessible and well connected for both residents and visitors. Public realm, street trees, improved paving, and increased pedestrian priority are key aspects of the works proposed to the streetscape in providing a safe, vibrant, iconic space within Edinburgh’s existing building fabric.

DEVELOPMENT

Dynamic forms and bespoke raised seating edges respond to the functional requirements of the building and users, respond to primary circulation routes, whilst defining a central events space and creating a flexible core for a range of events including market stalls and pop-up events. The courtyard space is open to the public during the daytime, with access for residents only during the evening. The landscape has been designed to provide a series of relaxed and informal social spaces for both residents and visitors.

RESULTS

This is a contemporary and engaging public realm project that blends well with the existing urban fabric. This is reflected in the high-quality material palette, set by the overall masterplan for the area. Ultimately, the design reflects the clients aspirations by providing a vibrant and engaging pedestrian friendly environment that builds in flexibility for the residents and wider community.
