OOBE worked with Aedas to develop the landscape masterplan for a new build American Curriculum School for 2800 students from Pre-Kindergarten through to IB Diploma. The concept for the external layout draws inspiration from traditional Islamic patterns and ancient gardens. Water is used in a variety of ways to delight and emphasise the arrival. A simple yet elegant rill allows water to flow across coloured tiles, drawing people through the approach sequence and into the building where it gathers in a pool with raised edges providing informal seating. Our designs for paving units are based on an Islamic pattern to form a simple & contemporary carpet effect which has been translated in the bespoke furniture, feature walls and canopy designs. Planting creates shade and softens the hard, built forms. An avenue of palms either side of the central rill emphasise the main entrance approach providing a grand arrival experience. Either side of these trees a sequence of planters, with integrated seating, include bold swathes of drought tolerant Pennisetum grasses. The planting provides formality and grandeur leading visitors entering the site towards the civic plaza and VIP entrance. Dedicated external spaces for the kindergarten, elementary and middle school pupils are focused on outdoor learning and, alongside a suite of sport facilities, will support a wide range of external learning opportunities.
