Client: Newcastle NE1 Ltd
Location: Newcastle upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear
Working with NE1, OOBE has proposed a re-imagining of key areas within Newcastle, bringing character and vibrancy back to the city centre. Haymarket station becomes a focal point at the Northern end of Northumbria Street, with increased public space around the building footprint, opportunities for building spill out, markets, and performance space. A Bigg Market revival sees a more pedestrian friendly environment – widened footpaths, narrowed roads and increased spill out. Similarly with The Gate, an improved look and feel and a new traffic proposal to put an end to peak hour congestion. Looking further ahead, Percy Street has been earmarked as a pedestrian friendly route through the city, reconnecting the Royal Victoria Infirmary with the city centre, solving the major problem that staff, patients and visitors have endured on a daily basis. These ideas seek to keep Newcastle city centre as a vibrant pedestrian friendly environment, with space for spontaneity, variety and life.
