The new park along the River Skerne is an opportunity to create a unique environment reconnecting Darlington Town Centre with its riverside and provide a beautiful setting for the new commercial developments. The park should be shaped by the needs of the people, revitalisation of the river corridor, the rich heritage of the site and its diverse context including St Cuthbert’s Church, Victoria Embankment Conservation Area and the A167.
Town and river reunited through design
his park must be challenging and vibrant, but also comfortable and accessible; a place where people will want to spend time, but also feel engaged and inspired. It should celebrate the rich heritage of the site, but look to the future and challenge what a park can be. It must be flexible enough to respond to the needs of the individuals, groups and buildings that will use it, but must be distinctive enough to form a recognisable identity which in time we hope will extend further upstream, both north and south.
