Client: Newcastle NE1
Location: Newcastle upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear
A small plot of underused space, located in the heart of Newcastle’s Chinatown, has been transformed into a Chinese inspired garden by OOBE and NE1 Business Improvement District.
A garden of celebration and outdoor board games
A level seating area set within the slope creates the focus of the space. Grasses with architectural forms provide shelter whilst creating a backdrop for the more decorative and colourful mixture of herbaceous perennial planting. Stepping stones set within the grass, inspired by the form of petals, appear to drift from the new cherry tree planted to replace one damaged in 2012 by high winds. Several table tops have been inlaid with slate chess boards and games sets are available to borrow from nearby restaurants. Timber posts engraved with Chinese poetry form a decorative screen to this tranquil space.
