Location: Darlington, County Durham
A simple space for reflection, this garden, within the grounds of County Durham’s largest hospital, offers a welcome space for patients and families dealing with serious illness and injury.
The Darlington Memorial Hospital provides major acute services as well as a full range of outpatient clinics, diagnostics, inpatients and children’s surgery to a population of approximately 130,000. It is a key facility within the wider community and used by many.
A garden for your thoughts
The new hospital garden offers a private space, away from windows or walkways, in which to reflect. Architectural grasses and perennial planting provide a soft and serene backdrop as a bespoke timber screen weaves through the garden, sheltering intimate pockets of seating. A Silver Birch sits at the heart of the garden, offering dappled shade and delicate movement whilst a canvas canopy at the end of the garden provides more substantial shelter for year round use.
