A landmark office headquarters for BT which gained BREEAM ‘Excellent’. Forming phase one of a wider regeneration masterplan, the scheme has been designed to reconnect the town to the river. The building is characterised by ‘fingers’, between which nestles a courtyard entrance space. A tight site with limited external space, the courtyard creates not only an important piece of public realm that provides shelter and respite from the heavy traffic on Ferry Street, but also creates valuable habitat in an otherwise exposed riverside location.
Office courtyard creates a buzzing habitat
To heighten the drama within the arrival space low, organic landforms sweep into the courtyard, covered in drifts of Silver Birch and ribbons of grasses. Robust, swathes of flowering perennials introduce highlights of colour and moments of joy! Within the first planting season the space was buzzing with insects!
