QEH Emergency Care Centre

Client: Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust

Location: Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

A new Emergency Care Centre (ECC) set within the existing Queen Elizabeth Hospital campus. The 9,500sqm ECC is a three storey new build providing a co-located, integrated unit which redefines the entrance to the hospital.

A new facility within an existing hospital campus

Masterplanning was key to ensuring the site layout links into the existing campus, but also considered the future plans for the wider site. Achieving the right balance between the functional and aesthetic requirements of the external spaces is where OOBE came in. Evergreen hedges and perennial planting used in bold angular blocks, draped over organic landforms, help define spaces and screen views of the emergency drop off. Creative paving forms part of the wayfinding strategy through the site. A roof garden at level 4 provides a view of the natural world which can be appreciated from patient’s bedrooms. Bespoke seating invites visitors and patients to ‘lie down and listen to the sneezeweed grow’!
