Client: South Tyneside Council
Location: South Shields, Tyne and Wear
Sandhaven Extension is the connecting piece of promenade between two successful coastal regeneration areas along South Shields Foreshore. A simple approach to design reflects neighbouring schemes through coherent materials and features, whilst creating a safe and clear identity of its own.
Simple geometries pull together the three key, yet contrasting features within the scheme – The delicate shifting dunes, the vibrant seaside fairground, and the historic Life Brigade Museum forming the finale of the promenade.
Reconnecting the coastal walkway
Key nodes along the prom create simple, informal meeting spaces that focus activity within functional areas. Beyond this, bespoke benches take advantage of key views and provide more intimate areas to enjoy the coastline.
Collaborating with a local artist, sculptural shell seating, playful wall etchings and decorative gates establish and build upon the uniquely spirited coastal environment.
