Client: University of Huddersfield
Located to the south of the town centre, the five-storey Barbara Hepworth Building is the first part of a £30M redevelopment of the area around Queen Street South, which will be known as the Western Campus. The University of Huddersfield landscape needed to complement AHR’s outstanding design of the new campus’ building with a setting that promises to deliver.
Material choices are durable yet contemporary
With over 4m difference between main campus level and canal side road, and a further 1.6m down to the canal towpath level change was an integral part of design development.
An aspirational scheme was developed to celebrate the level changes through a series of learning and social terrace spaces, from this a baseline scheme was progressed as phase 1 that would not limit future potential.
The scheme utilises a campus material palette, developed by OOBE through previous masterplan interventions. Material choices are durable yet contemporary and will help build upon a coherent campus landscape.
