Pilgrim Street South Masterplan

CLEINT: Motcomb

LOCATION: Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

VALUE: £100M

OOBE has been commissioned to develop the landscape design and public realm associated with the new office and commercial development for the Southern Block of the East Pilgrim Street Masterplan.

The landscape vision set out to create an inviting place for users of the new Pilgrim Street South buildings and a flexible space for the wider community. With previous East Pilgrim Street involvement, OOBE understood the site’s context and associated complexities with highways, heritage and drainage requirements.

A key aspect of this public realm project is its robustness, longevity and appropriateness whilst ensuring a high-quality finish. Generous fixed seating provides comfortable places to rest integrated into the steps and planters.

Flexible open spaces can be used for events – including market stalls, street food vendors and performances. Self-sustaining naturalistic planting encourages biodiversity within Newcastle.

Proposed rain gardens across the site will offset surface water runoff. Bespoke street furniture, contemporary paving materials and signage have been designed to create a strong sense of place and improve pedestrian circulation to the city centre. The Bank House development benefits from south-facing external terraces, which act as the foreground setting for the building, as well as providing a new green space.

This transformational project will breathe new life into a key part of Newcastle. By creating a series of dynamic, inclusive and flexible public places, OOBE has produced a high-quality and welcoming destination. An easily accessible place where people will wish to linger and socialise and benefit from being in a green oasis.
