Littlehaven Promenade

LOCATION: South Tyneside
VALUE: £5M

Artistic interventions celebrating a unique location.

At the junction where the River Tyne meets the sea, Littlehaven promenade and beach is a truly unique location with a strong sense of place.

The South Tyneside Council and Royal Haskoning project was an opportunity to resolve coastal defence issues and enhance a unique environment to complement the range of attractions in South Shields. It involved demolishing a failing seawall, constructing a 500m promenade and sea wall and landscaping. Environmental impacts were minimised by reusing materials on-site where practicable and cost-effective to do so.

OOBE added value by revisiting the existing masterplan and advising on design changes that would strengthen the impact of the overall scheme and alleviate flooding. The landscape design acknowledged the site’s significant location and cultural history through a strong narrative. In partnership with artists Broadbent Studio, local sea-shanties and poems were woven in bespoke artwork. High quality detailing and craftsmanship embed the scheme, create a sense of ownership and make the most of panoramic views. Contemporary and naturalistic planting encourages biodiversity.

Littlehaven has won over a dozen awards. It has been transformed into an exciting, engaging and inspiring place. The flexible space responds to individual and group needs. It brings joy to those who use it.

“Coming into the project at a late stage, OOBE quickly understood the brief provided and integrated within the project team. A range of measures were suggested by OOBE, incorporating softening of the engineering design, street furniture, surface treatments, bespoke artwork and softworks design.

“OOBE’s flexible approach has assisted the development of the Littlehaven works, the team at OOBE have been on hand to provide input as the scheme has progressed from design into construction. A pragmatic approach by OOBE and a thorough understanding of South Tyneside Council’s requirements has allowed the scheme to be significantly enhanced further to their appointment.”
