Millport Flood Defence Scheme
Shortlisted in the 2026 Pineapple Award for Climate Resilience.
BACKGROUND
The Flood Protection Scheme for Millport was established following its identification in the National Flood Risk Assessment and its subsequent inclusion in the Ayrshire Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and Plan in 2015.
Millport, a small town situated on a narrow, low-lying coastal strip, is particularly vulnerable to coastal flooding. The majority of the town’s residential and commercial buildings are located just inshore of existing coastal protection structures, adjacent to a promenade and a coastal road.
To address these challenges, OOBE, in collaboration with Royal Haskoning DHV, was tasked with developing the landscape design concept that aligns with the flood defense requirements. The initiative aims to create a space that not only provides essential flood protection but also enhances the aesthetic and functional quality of public areas, making them inviting and useful for the community.
THE CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT
The envisioned design includes a mix of hard and soft landscaping solutions, such as carefully selected paving materials, diverse planting palettes, steps, ramps, boundary treatments, street furniture, and art installations. These elements are designed to blend functionality with visual appeal, supporting both the town’s heritage and environmental conservation efforts.
Throughout the project development, North Ayrshire Council and the design team maintained close collaboration with the local community, ensuring that public input was a key component in shaping the final design. This community-centered approach aimed to create a sense of ownership and ensure the project’s alignment with local needs and values.
RESULTS
With construction set to commence this year, the project seeks to deliver effective coastal flood protection infrastructure while simultaneously enhancing Millport’s public spaces.
By integrating artistic and landscape elements, the scheme aims to protect the town from flooding, improve the quality of life for residents, and enhance the visitor experience. The project balances the need for robust infrastructure with the preservation of the town’s historical and ecological character, positioning Millport for a resilient and prosperous future..
