Granton Western Villages

OOBE was commissioned to design the landscape masterplan and public realm for a 300-unit residential development, part of the broader Granton Waterfront Masterplan. This initiative forms a key element in the revitalisation of Granton, integrating sustainable living within natural surroundings.

The landscape proposals were crafted to create a serene, natural sanctuary for residents and visitors, seamlessly intertwining the natural environment with the site’s industrial heritage. The design prioritises pedestrian movement, offering a pedestrian-led experience that enhances walkability while fostering connections between people, nature, and history.

Sustainability is a core focus, with the landscape integrating eco-friendly solutions to create an ideal living environment. This project is the first phase of the Granton Western Villages masterplan, which aims to be carbon neutral in operation.

The masterplan emphasises the integration of blue/green infrastructure, reflecting a commitment to sustainable urban design. A key feature of the development is its connection to the Sustrans cycle network, which promotes active travel and reduces carbon emissions. The landscape design also incorporates SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) to manage stormwater, ensuring resilience against climate impacts.

Additionally, the design strengthens the tree belts and parkland that border the development, linking new green infrastructure to the existing landscape. This connection enhances the site’s ecological value, supporting biodiversity and wildlife habitats. By integrating these natural features, the project improves environmental sustainability and creates a healthier, more livable space for residents.

High-quality external spaces are crucial to establishing a cohesive and vibrant community. The natural features play a significant role in shaping the character of the area. The thoughtful combination of natural elements and modern urban design creates a space where residents of all ages can enjoy a balanced, healthy lifestyle. By integrating nature, sustainability, and community-focused design, the development establishes a unique and appealing neighborhood that blends modern living with environmental stewardship.
